Education and Training
The most effective way to prevent sexual harassment is through education. The Office of Sexual Harassment Prevention & Policy (OSHPP) provides educational programs and information designed specifically for faculty, staff and students. The following links are provided to increase accessibility to this information for all members of the campus community.
NOTE: Online program for supervisors will be available beginning February 5th, 2009.

Mandatory Supervisor Training Frequently Asked Questions
Attention Supervisors!!
Effective January 1, 2005, UCSD supervisors and academic appointees are required to take a 2-hour education course every 2 years.
Following are frequently asked questions relating to this requirement:
Who is required to take a supervisory education course?
All supervisors, including all employees with HEERA designations, or employees who
may meet the following criteria:
Any individual having the authority, and the interest of the employer, to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline other employees, or the responsibility to direct them, or to adjust their grievances, or effectively to recommend that action, if, in connection with the foregoing, the exercise of that authority is not merely of a routine or clerical nature, but requires the use of independent judgment.”
At UC San Diego, the following groups of employees are included:
- All SMG (Senior Management Group)
- All MSP (Management and Senior Professional)
- All staff supervisors (employees with HEERA code designations)
- All staff work leaders (must be given an “S” code in the “Special Training Required” field in PPS)
- All faculty
- Most academic appointees
If you are a PPS preparer for staff employees and have questions regarding coding, click
here.
If you are a PPS preparer for academic employees and want to check which appointees need an “S” code in the “Special Training Required” field in PPS,

Not sure if you are required to take the course? If you have questions that are not answered above, you may contact the following persons:
Staff employees – Jenni Leibman, Director, Employee Relations, at
Jenni Leibman
Academic appointees – Kelly Maheu , Pr Admin Analyst, at
Kelly Maheu
Medical Center Employees – Tamitha Mueller, Learning Management Systems Coordinator, at
Tamitha Mueller
An employee who does not strictly meet the definition above is free to take
the required training. The fact that an employee is required by UC San Diego
to take the training, or takes the training voluntarily, does not mean the
person is a “supervisor” under any law.
What are the deadlines for satisfying the supervisory education requirement?
Effective January 1, 2005, UCSD supervisors and academic appointees are required to take a 2-hour education course every 2 years. For employees who took the course in 2005, 2007 was a re-training year.
New supervisors or academic appointees have six months in which to satisfy the requirement. Continuing employees will receive an email notification on the two-year anniversary of their previous compliance and will be given 90 days in which to satisfy the requirement.
How can I satisfy the requirement?
Employees who are subject to the requirement may satisfy it in one of 2 ways:
-
Sign up for a classroom presentation. Enrollment Central, a service of Staff Education & Development, offers Sexual Harassment Prevention: The Supervisor's Survival Guide, which satisfies the mandatory sexual harassment training requirement for supervisors under California law. Departments may also arrange for special classroom presentations by contacting OSHPP.
- Take the online program using the individualized link sent from the UC Learning Center.
*Note: If you use someone else’s link, you will not be given credit for satisfying the course, since all links are individualized.
** PLEASE NOTE: UCSD has an online program through New Media Learning for non-supervisory employees and students. Though all employees are welcome to view the New Media Learning program, it does not currently satisfy the supervisory education requirement.
Looking for the link to the 2-hour online course?
If you have not received an email from the UC Learning Center with an individualized link to the online program, there are several possible reasons:
- You already satisfied the requirement.
- You are not required to satisfy the requirement.
- You are registered with your official UCSD email account, which you do not check, or you are registered with no email address.
- You are registered, and your spam blocker is blocking the email reminders from UCOP.
- There is an error in the way your information has been entered in the Payroll Personnel System that needs to be corrected.
If you have lost the email with your individualized link, you may e-mail
uclearningcenter@ucop.edu and ask that it be re-sent.
Having technical difficulties with your link?
All technical questions should be directed to
